Full-time Postdoctoral Fellows (PDF)

 

Duration and Support

Each awardee shall be granted an annual support of RMB 500,000 including salary, medical insurance, and travel support for a period up to 3 years. The default length is 1 year, renewable for another year subject to funding availability and performance evaluations.

 

Qualifications and Requirements

1. The PDF is required to have a PhD degree (or one to be obtained soon) in related research areas (such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Operations Research) from an internationally well-known university.

2. The PDF is required to have two supervisors, one from a leading overseas research institute and one from AIRS.

3. The PDF can spend up to half of the appointment time in the overseas research institute, and spend rest of the time in AIRS.

4. AIRS should be the PDF’s first affiliation in all publications and patents produced by the PDF during the supporting period.

Project Introduction

Group Introduction

 

The AIRS Research Center for Computer Vision is a research center jointly established by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHKSZ) and The Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS), led by Professor David Zhang (Director) and Professor Rui Huang (Deputy Director). The Center aims at performing high quality research in the areas of computer vision, pattern recognition, image processing, and multi-media, and promoting international collaboration for the integration, application and development of visual intelligence technologies over the Greater Bay Area in the Peril River basin.

 

A new collaborative project has been established between the Center and Senior Research Fellow Professor Takeo Kanade from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. The Software Engineer position is available to work for this collaborative project.

Senior Postdoctoral Fellow (CoBot) & Senior Postdoctoral Fellow (Mutil Contact) – Prof. Sethu Vijayakumar Research Group

Overview

The University of Edinburgh, UK (UoE) and Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS) are jointly offering this postdoctoral research position to highly motivated researcher to work on innovative projects. The successful candidate will spend time in both Edinburgh and Shenzhen. Several state-of-the-art robot platforms in Edinburgh Centre of Robotics will be available to facilitate the research, for e.g., the torque controllable bipedal humanoid robot TALOS and ANYmal.

Professor Sethu Vijayakumar (sethu.vijayakumar@ed.ac.uk)

Professor Sethu Vijayakumar FRSE holds a Personal Chair in Robotics within the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh and is the Director of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and Programme co-Director for AI at The Alan Turing Institute, helping shape and drive the UK national agenda in Robotics and Autonomous Systems. He holds the Senior Research Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering, co-funded by Microsoft Research and is also an Adjunct Faculty of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. His research group at the University of Edinburgh has been successful in winning three EPSRC funded RAI hubs focusing on real world challenges in the Offshore (Offshore Robotics for Certification of Assets (ORCA)), Space (FAIR- SPACE) and Nuclear (NCNR) domains -- with overall investment of over £32M across academic partners (Oxford, Imperial, etc.) besides participating in several EU H2020 projects with European partners.

 

Statistical Machine Learning and Motor Control Group (SLMC)

Professor Vijayakumar’s research group (SLMC) study all aspects of robot motion synthesis, from planning and representation to actuator design and control. We employ techniques from the fields of probabilistic inference and learning, stochastic optimal control, reinforcement (and apprenticeship) learning and large-scale optimization to tackle real world, real-time problems in anthropomorphic robotic systems. A cornerstone of our approach is data driven methods for learning and adaptation.

 

Broadly speaking, the Statistical Machine Learning and Motor Control Group at the University of Edinburgh conducts research under the following themes: 1. learning algorithms for optimal planning and control of large degree of freedom anthropomorphic robotic systems; 2. design, development and control of novel anthropomorphic hardware (e.g., variable impedance actuators) 3. study of optimal multi-sensory integration strategies and implications for neural prosthetics (sensory substitution, feedback) 4. study of computational principles behind human sensorimotor control (including psychophysics of human movement).

 

Key Research Goals of Advertised Post:

 

The broad research goals aim to pursue advances in robotics and AI solutions that create innovations in human-friendly intelligent manufacturing industry, sharing human intelligence with robots and improving human safety and work efficiency.

Successful candidates will be responsible for carrying out research for human-robot assembly and multi-agent collaboration in shared manufacturing workspace. For each task, the robot partner should have the ability to adapt to other agents’ actions. Therefore, an adaptive and flexible robot policy should be generated for complying with the common objective of collaboration task. Additionally, a major challenge would be designing, prioritizing and distributing the subtasks among the human and the robot team autonomy dynamically. As the human motion can be used as the input of the multi-agent system, it would be necessary to model and predict human motion to reduce human cognitive load and improve work efficiency. There are several candidate robot platforms that are available for multi-agent collaboration scenario, including several Nextage  robots, mobile Husky dual-arm robot, KUKA and Franka robots. All these robots have force/torque sensors in addition to the Vicon motion capture system.

About the Research Center on Special Robots

 

Directed by Dr. Ning Ding and now leading two major researches:

 

Structure Design and Motion Control of Special Robots for Infrastructure Maintenance Tasks. This subject involves topics such as design of high-load bionic climbing mechanism and high-maneuverability motion control system under environmental space constraints and optimal design of robot’s structural parameters and motion strategy based on reinforcement learning framework under constraints from the environment and energy supply.

 

Disease/Crack Detection at Surface and Subsurface of Infrastructure Concrete Structure. Group Introduction

 

Internet of Things and Smart Cloud Laboratory is a research institution jointly established by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society, led by Professor Kai Hwang. As an IEEE Fellow professor Kai Hwang is a world-famous computer researcher, specializing in computer systems, parallel cloud computing, internet of things perception and big data analysis. The modeling theory proposed by Professor Hwang in recent years, which integrates intelligent cloud, artificial intelligence chips, edge sensing devices and the Internet of Things, has led the frontier research in cloud computing and edge computing.

 

This laboratory aims to integrate high-performance computing, cloud computing, machine learning and Internet of Things technologies to build a large-scale intelligent industrial data center, so as to promote the integration, application and development of industrial intelligent cloud and industrial Internet of Things technologies over the Greater Bay Area in the Peril River basin.

About the Research Center on Crowd Intelligence (RCCI) at AIRS

With the accelerated evolution of information technologies such as the Internet, big data and cloud computing, crowd intelligence has increasingly played an important role in the information environment of the Internet of Everything, thus profoundly changing the field of artificial intelligence. Qualifications and Requirements

 

(1)Passion in building up a research institute with a leading international standard.

(2)A PhD degree (or one to be obtained soon) in related research areas (such as CS, EE) from a well-known university.

(3)Different positions require different technical qualifications. For example, a Postdoc Fellow will be suitable for a fresh PhD graduate, while a Senior Research Scientist requires an academic background similar as a full professor at a leading research university.

About the Research Center on Unmanned System (RCUS) at AIRS

 

The Research Center on Unmanned System (RCUS) was established in July 2019. Our mission is to create robotic and intelligent systems that are able to operate autonomously in urban complex and diverse environments. Our research interests includes novel methods for perception, mapping, path planning, manipulation and cooperation between multiple agents. This center is well equipped with experimental and computational facilities. At RCUS, students and staffs work closely together to do research in the discovery, design, and implementation of novel applications of unmanned system.
